Test Center

about TZWL

TZWL e. V. (European Testing Center for Domestic Ventilation Systems, NPO) was founded on December 14th 1999 as a non-profit organisation. Since 2004, TZWL is associated with the Fachhochschule Dortmund (University of Applied Sciences).

In its role as an independent institute, TZWL performs testings of residential ventilation units - with or without heat recovery - as one of solely three test centers in Germany in this field. On the basis of TZWL test reports, manufacturers of ventilation units apply for the Bauartzulassung (national technical approval) from the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt), Berlin, or the Passive House Certificate from the Passive House Institute (PHI), Darmstadt.

Apart from approval tests, TZWL has a strong emphasis on development. With over 200 executed testings on highly diverse ventilation systems in over 15 years of corporate history, TZWL has the knowledge to empower manufacturers with the best possible guidance while developing their new devices.

With the consent of the manufacturers taking part, TZWL publishes test results in its free-to-read publications Information Portal for Domestic Ventilation and TZWL-eBulletin (Listing of residential ventilation systems with or without heat recovery). In this way, TZWL informs both professionals and laymen neutrally about the latest residential ventilation units and about the efficiency of heat recovery and ventilation systems in general.

As a service contractor, TZWL provides services for building owners, architects, planners and the industry in the field of energy efficiency, air-quality and environmental technologies. As an example, TZWL issues independent ventilation concepts for building owners or conducts testings of air-tightness on buildings (Blower Door).

Statutory tasks of TZWL, NPO

Purpose of the association is the support of science in the field of rational energy demand in respect of energy, air quality and environmental aspects

  • by developing new testing concepts for efficient ventilation systems
  • by providing practical training for specialists and energy application engineers with the aim of the improved usage of ventilation systems and heat pipes
  • by generally publishing information and documenting test results, leading to an increased product quality of ventilation systems
  • by optimisation and improvement of the hardware of ventilation systems

These purposes serve

  • the preliminary work for the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt), Berlin
  • the preliminary work regarding national and international standardisation
  • the cooperation with the Fachhochschule Dortmund, Fachbereich "Informations- und Elektrotechnik"; Labor für technische Gebäudeausrüstung, and other universities and polytechnic in Germany and with international partners (Initiative DACH, Fördergemeinschaft Wärmepumpen Schweiz, Bundesverband Wärmepumpen Österreich, Bundesverband Wärmepumpen Deutschland, Bundesverband Wohnungslüftung, Fachverband Luftdichtheit im Bauwesen und dem internationalen Wirtschaftsforum regenerative Energien).
